Installing Hanouti with confidence

One page: Windows or macOS warning, checking the file, help.

Why this warning?

Windows and macOS warn whenever you install software whose publisher is not "recognised". To be recognised, a publisher must buy a code-signing certificate, which costs money every year. We have not been able to fund it yet: we will buy it as soon as licence sales allow.

So the warning does not say the file is dangerous; it says the system cannot yet verify who published it. That is why we give you a way to verify it yourself, below.

Windows: SmartScreen

After you run the installer, Windows may show "Windows protected your PC". Three moves:

  1. 1 Run the installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe file. The blue SmartScreen window appears.

  2. 2 More info

Click "More info", the link under the text.

  3. 3 Run anyway

A new button appears: click "Run anyway", then follow the installer.

macOS: Gatekeeper

At first launch, macOS may refuse the double-click. Three ways to open it, from the simplest to the last resort:

  1. 1 Drag to Applications

Open the .dmg, then drag Hanouti into the Applications folder.

  2. 2 Right-click, then Open

In Applications, right-click (or Ctrl-click) Hanouti, choose "Open", then click "Open" again in the window.

  3. 3 Open Anyway

If the "Open" button does not appear (macOS 15 and later): System Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the message about Hanouti, click "Open Anyway" and confirm with your Mac password.

Last resort, in Terminal:

xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Hanouti.app

Verify the SHA-256 fingerprint

The fingerprint is like the file's serial number: if a single byte changes, it changes. Compute it on the downloaded file and compare it with the one shown on this page.

Windows (PowerShell)

Get-FileHash .\Hanouti-Setup-2.7.0-x64.exe -Algorithm SHA256

macOS (Terminal)

shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Hanouti-2.7.0-arm64.dmg

If the 64 characters are identical, the file is the right one. Otherwise do not open it: download it again, then report it.

Updates are signed

Once Hanouti is installed, it updates itself. Every update is described in a signed list (Ed25519): the app checks the signature, then the SHA-256 fingerprint of each downloaded file, before installing anything. A list that was altered, is older, or comes from another server is refused.

If an update fails to start, Hanouti goes back to the previous version by itself. This signature protects updates; it does not replace signing the very first installer, hence the verification above.

A problem? Report it

Write to us on WhatsApp with the version, your system (Windows or macOS) and the message shown. A screenshot helps a lot.
